Appeal Filing Being Drafted

The Save Math In Issaquah legal advisory team has decided that there are sufficient issues concerning the Board's decision to approve the adoption of Discovering Math to justify drafting an appeal. We have until April 21 2010 to file the appeal with King County Superior Court.

  2. If you are really concerned about the damage that the Discovering Math curriculum will do to the students, please also consider the impacts of a lawsuit. There is no money allocated in the ISD budget for lawyers and depositions, so cuts would need to be made, which will directly impact the students. Include the costs of another math adoption, and of continuing to supplement the current curriculum to bring it up to state standards - and it starts to add up to big numbers, especially in these lean economic times. Please, let's just use the "lessons learned" from this adoption, and move forward without doing even more damage.

  3. The Issaquah board should have considered this when they made their decision. I've personally asked the people at the school district about this very issue and they seemed not to be concerned. I'm originally from New Jersey, and I can honestly say that the Issaquah math program is woefully inadequate comparatively. If Discovering Math is anything like Everyday Math that they are currently teaching at the elementary level, I could only imagine the damage it will do. How can people support the appeal?

  4. Here is an interesting article, recently published in the New York Times. The topic is how to improve teaching, but it also covers some possibilities for why the US vs. rest of the world math gap exists - and some ideas for fixing it quickly. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/07/magazine/07Teachers-t.html

Note to James... Everyday Math and Discovering Math are different curricula, different ages, different publishers. If you have problems with Everyday Math, a lawsuit against Discovering Math is not going to change anything in elementary school.

  5. Mark, as a parent with children entering the Issaquah school district, I'm very concerned with this. Can you update the status of the problem and let me know who I can help?
